A Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 (reg. 9V‑SKS) preparing for departure from Frankfurt to Singapore experienced a small fire in its ground power unit (GPU) while parked on the tarmac. The fire started externally, affecting the GPU that supplies power to the aircraft before engines are started. Ground crews acted quickly, extinguishing the fire without injuries. The incident caused a delay of about 40 minutes, with flight SQ325 eventually departing Frankfurt at 22:24 local time and scheduled to arrive in Singapore the next day at 16:23 local time .
The GPU is a crucial unit used to power cockpit systems, cabin air conditioning, lighting, and avionics when the aircraft’s engines or onboard auxiliary power unit are off. Fires involving ground equipment are rare but can happen due to equipment malfunction or overheating.
After technicians completed the necessary operational checks and safety inspections, the aircraft was deemed airworthy and departed without further incident. While the delay disrupted time-sensitive operations, passengers and crew remained safe, and no additional complications were reported.
