A three-day Mberengwa District Agricultural Show saw more than 500 communal farmers from across the district, exhibiting various farm produce at Danga Growth Point.
With Mberengwa under ecological regions four and five, which is characterised by erratic rainfall, farmers from across the district defied production odds this season as witnessed by huge numbers that came to exhibit at the district agricultural show.
“It is a motivation to us as farmers. We would always want to do better to improve our standards. We want to be self-sustaining in terms of food and other income-generating projects, which are also on display here,” a farmer said.
“We get new ideas through such initiatives and interaction. I am delighted in this edition of the show, I have managed to outclass some other exhibitors,” another noted.
The government is impressed by farmers’ uptake of modern farming techniques in the face of climate change, which it says are playing a crucial role towards food self-sufficiency.
“I want to commend the organisers for bringing together farmers, innovators, and stakeholders to share knowledge, showcase products, and networking. Events like these are crucial for promoting agricultural development in our district, as we had a bumper harvest this season compared to last season. I encourage all participants to take advantage of the exhibits, demonstrations and workshops on offer today and all government-supported programmes,” ARDAS’ Midlands Provincial director, Ms Olga Mavankeni said.
The district agricultural show is a precursor of the Midlands Provincial Agricultural Show, which runs from August 14 to August 17 in Gweru.
