President William Ruto has called on African nations to deepen intra-Africa trade as a pathway to reducing extreme poverty and driving economic growth. Speaking at a regional forum, Ruto emphasized that the continent’s long-term prosperity depends on Africans trading more with each other rather than relying heavily on exports to foreign markets.
He noted that Africa is rich in resources and talent but remains held back by fragmented markets, weak supply chains, and overdependence on imports. By strengthening trade within the continent, Ruto said African countries can create jobs, improve food security, and build resilience against global economic shocks.
The president urged the full implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), saying it has the potential to lift millions out of poverty by unlocking new markets and promoting industrialization. He also called for better infrastructure, harmonized regulations, and investment in technology to support seamless cross-border trade.
Ruto warned that unless Africa reduces its reliance on external trade partners, extreme poverty will remain a challenge for many households. He stressed that building strong internal markets is the surest way to secure the continent’s economic independence and sustainable development.
