National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has sent a sharp message to President William Ruto, using a popular African proverb to illustrate his point. Wetangula said, “When the hyena wants to eat its children, it says they smell like goats,” implying that leaders should not turn against their own people or allies under the guise of justification.
His remarks come amid growing political tensions and shifting alliances within Kenya’s ruling coalition. Wetangula stressed the need for unity and fairness, warning against actions that could weaken trust among leaders and citizens.
The proverb, widely understood across Africa, was used to highlight the danger of betrayal and self-interest in leadership. Wetangula called on leaders to protect their people, stand by their commitments, and avoid excuses that harm those they are meant to serve.
The statement has sparked debate in political circles, with many interpreting it as a cautionary reminder to President Ruto about how he handles relationships within government and with the Kenyan people.
