There are footballers who leave the game, and then there are footballers who never truly leave it.

For Ronaldinho, the return to the spotlight came not inside one of Europe’s grandest stadiums, but on the shores of Ravenna, where thousands of supporters gathered Thursday to welcome one of the most recognizable names in world football.

The Brazilian legend arrived in the Italian city to begin an extraordinary new chapter with Ravenna, the Serie C club that has signed the 46-year-old more than a decade after his professional retirement.

Ravenna transformed its seaside presentation into a celebration of football nostalgia. Thousands of supporters gathered despite intermittent rain, waving flags and lighting flares as music filled the air. When Ronaldinho finally appeared wearing the club’s No. 10 shirt, the atmosphere became less like the unveiling of a player and more like the return of a cultural icon.

The choice of Hall of Fame by The Script as part of the presentation seemed almost unnecessary. Ronaldinho’s name has already been written into football’s hall of fame through moments that transcended generations.

He arrived in Italy by private jet at Forlì Airport, roughly 30 kilometres from Ravenna, where he signed footballs for airport staff before leaving for the city. He was accompanied by Ravenna president Ignazio Cipriani, whose family is associated with the renowned Cipriani restaurant brand.

But the biggest question surrounding this remarkable comeback remains unanswered: when will Ronaldinho actually play?

The Brazilian made it clear that his immediate involvement will depend on Ravenna’s president and coaching staff. He will not feature in Ravenna’s opening Serie C fixture against Reggio Emilia on Monday, and there is still uncertainty over how much competitive football he intends to play during the season.

Asked about his physical condition, Ronaldinho responded with characteristic laughter, saying he feels fine, while acknowledging that his eventual appearance will depend on the club’s decision-makers.

For Ravenna, however, this is about far more than minutes on a football pitch.

Cipriani has openly expressed the dream of seeing Ronaldinho score what could become the final goal of his professional career in a Ravenna shirt. The Brazilian did not promise such a moment, but he did not dismiss it either.

His message was simple: he has come because of friendship and because he wants to help.

That friendship is now connecting one of football’s most celebrated figures with a club operating far away from the glamorous stages where Ronaldinho once performed his magic.

His professional career included unforgettable spells with Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, AC Milan and Flamengo, among others. With Brazil, he became a world champion in 2002. In 2005, he captured the Ballon d’Or, cementing his place among the greatest players of his generation.

His years at Barcelona produced some of the most memorable football of the modern era. The smile, the elastic dribbles, the impossible passes and the audacious free kicks became part of football’s visual language.

Italy was also an important chapter in his career. Ronaldinho represented AC Milan between 2008 and 2011, bringing his creativity to Serie A and adding another major European league to his extraordinary journey.

His last professional appearance came for Fluminense in 2015.

More than a decade later, Ravenna has offered him an unusual road back.

Whether Ronaldinho scores another professional goal, plays a competitive match or simply becomes an inspirational presence around the club, his arrival has already achieved something that football clubs spend millions trying to create: attention, emotion and a connection between generations.

The children watching him today grew up hearing stories about the player who could make a football appear to obey a different set of laws. Older supporters remember watching him at the height of his powers, when every touch seemed capable of producing something unexpected.

Now Ravenna gets to write its own chapter in the Ronaldinho story.

The beachside rain may have interrupted the celebration, but it could not dampen the significance of the moment.

Ronaldinho is back in Italy.

And, for Ravenna, the beautiful game suddenly feels a little more beautiful again.
