The UK’s prestigious Royal Television Society (RTS) has presented its Judges’ Award to Al Jazeera journalists Peter Greste, Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy.
The trio were put in prison by the Egyptian authorities on 29th December 2013. Greste was released earlier this month, while the ordeal for Mohamed and Fahmy continues – they were bailed last week pending retrial.
The award is given to recognise an outstanding contribution to the advancement of television journalism, Al Jazeera said yesterday.
Presenting the award at their annual ceremony in London last night, the RTS said:
“Tonight the RTS recognises the three ‘brothers’ as Peter has called them. The released one and two on bail. Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed. Men who conducted themselves with enormous dignity and courage in the face of continued uncertainty about their fate. And we also recognise the commitment of the people who have campaigned and continue to campaign for the release of the two on bail.”
Accepting the award on behalf of all three, Greste thanked his fellow news professionals:
“I’d be willing to bet this award that journalists have never united around a single common cause in the way that they have ours. I know how important it has been.
“For us, in prison of course we knew a bit about it. We were aware of some of the demonstrations; we’d heard about the zip-the-lips campaign and the letters. We knew the subject was consistently coming up in news conferences and interviews. And most surprisingly, some of our most vocal supporters were our direct rivals like CNN and the BBC who’d normally rather eat their own babies than acknowledge the opposition!,” he added.
Two seats were left empty at the ceremony for Baher and Fahmy as they could not attend due to bail conditions. They will be back in court on Monday 23rd February.

Le trio ont été mis en prison par les autorités égyptiennes sur 29 décembre 2013. Greste a été libéré plus tôt ce mois-ci, alors quel’épreuve pour Mohamed et Fahmy continue – ils ont été libéré sous caution la semaine dernière dans l’attente de nouveau procès.
Le prix est décerné à reconnaître une contribution exceptionnelleà l’avancement du journalisme de télévision, Al Jazeera a déclaréhier.
Remettant le prix lors de leur cérémonie annuelle à Londres lanuit dernière, la RTS a dit
“Ce soir la RTS reconnaît les trois“frères”comme Peter a appelées.Celui libéré et deux sous caution. Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmyet Mohamed Baher. Hommes qui se sont conduits avec dignitéénorme et courage face à l’incertitude sur leur sort. « Et nousreconnaissons également l’engagement du peuple qui ont mené campagne et continue à faire campagne pour la libération desdeux sous caution ».
Accepter le prix au nom de tous les trois, Greste a remercié sesprofessionnels de nouvelles collègues :
“Je serais prêt à parier que ce prix que les journalistes n’ontjamais Unis autour d’une seule cause commune de la façon dontils sont nôtres. Je sais pas comment il a joué un rôle important.
« Pour nous, dans la prison bien sûr nous savions un peu à cesujet. Nous étions au courant de certaines des manifestations ;Nous avions entendu parler de la campagne de zip-the-lips et leslettres. Nous savions que le sujet se montait régulièrement dansles conférences de presse et interviews. Et il n’est plus surprenant,certains de nos plus ardents partisans étaient nos concurrentsdirects comme CNN et la BBC qui serait normalement préfèremanger leurs propres bébés que de reconnaître l’opposition!, “a-t-il ajouté.
Deux sièges ont été laissés vides lors de la cérémonie pourMichael Ballack et Fahmy car ils ne pouvaient pas participer en raison des conditions de liberté sous caution. Ils seront en Courle lundi 23 février.
