BURUNDIAN Second Vice-President Gervais Rufyikiri claimed yesterday that he had fled the country in fear for his life after opposing President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term.
Mr Rufyikiri is the most senior government minister to jump ship amid tension over the president’s actions.
Dozens of people were killed in violent protests last month that led to a failed military coup.
Mr Rufyikiri, who headed to Belgium last week, also claimed in an interview on Radio France International broadcast yesterday that he had not officially resigned.
Presidential adviser Willy Nyamitwe colourfully confirmed that Mr Rufyikiri had fled.
“Goodbye and good riddance. Rufyikiri is the refrain of the song of my heart,” Mr Nyamitwe said.
