Transport: Tunisia, Two New Highways To Open In 2016

The new highways of Sfax-Gabès and Oued Zarga/BouSalem will open in the summer of 2016, Tunisia’s Infrastructure Minister Mohamed Salah Arfaoui has said during a visit to the governorate of Médenine. He also announced the inauguration of other highways in 2018 that will bring the Tunisian highway network to reach a total of 1,000 km.

The objective of the minister’s visit was to control progress on construction of another highway, the Médenine/Ras Jedir, which stretches over 104 km until the Libyan border. Its construction, co-funded by the African Development Bank, is estimated to cost some 225 million euros and was slowed down due to lack of funding. The minister urged for a quick solution in order to end construction work as only 27% of the project has been completed.
