Frontier Airlines A321 Suffers Main Gear Fire During Landing in Las Vegas

A Frontier Airlines Airbus A321-200 arriving from San Diego, CA suffered a main gear fire on landing in Las Vegas on 5 October 2024.Frontier Airlines flight F91326 had conducted an arrival and was given clearance to land on runway 26L Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS). During the descent, flight crew had reported detecting smoke in the cockpit, and had donned oxygen masks as a precaution.

Following the report, radio contact was briefly disrupted between the aircraft and air traffic control. Flight crew were not able to transmit on radio but were receiving ATC instructions. They were able to acknowledge ATC instructions by using the ‘ident’ facility on the transponder.

On landing, flames were seen emitting from the aircraft’s right main gear assembly. Flight crew brought the aircraft to a stop on the runway where it was attended by emergency service ground assets. The aircraft’s undercarriage was sprayed with foam and water and the fire was brought under control.

Following the runway incident, all passengers and crew were disembarked via air stairs and transferred to the terminal. According to subsequent statements by both the FAA and the airline, there were no injuries sustained as a result of the landing incident. The flight was carrying a total of 190 passengers and 7 crew members. Flight data shows that flight F91326 had departed from San Diego International Airport (SAN) at 1351 local time on 5 October.

The flight and then proceeded normally until the issue was reported to ATC during the latter stages of the descent into Las Vegas. The FAA confirmed that the landing incident occurred around 1620 local time.

The aircraft conducting the F91326 service from San Diego was an Airbus A321-200, registered N701FR. This is a 9-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Frontier Airlines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in October 2015. It operates under the airline name of ‘Otto the Owl’. The Las Vegas approach and landing event will now be the subject of both an FAA and NTSB investigation.
