Tensions Rise as Zambia’s President Excluded from Predecessor’s Funeral

In a rare show of political tension, the family of Zambia’s late former president has publicly declared that current President Hakainde Hichilema is not welcome at the state funeral. The move has stirred debate across the nation, exposing underlying rifts within the country’s political elite.

The late former leader, whose contributions shaped a significant chapter in Zambia’s democratic journey, passed away earlier this week. While preparations for the national burial are underway, his relatives have insisted that President Hichilema stay away from all proceedings, including the funeral service.

A spokesperson for the family stated that their decision stems from “deep personal and political grievances” they claim were never resolved during the deceased’s lifetime. They accuse the current administration of disrespecting the former president’s legacy and failing to honor promises made in the aftermath of his presidency.

The Office of the President has not issued an official response, but sources within State House expressed “regret” over the development, noting that the government still intends to accord the late leader a full state burial with all official honors.

Political analysts say the incident could deepen political divisions and raise questions about unity within Zambia’s democratic system. Meanwhile, citizens remain divided, with some supporting the family’s stance while others call for national reconciliation and respect for state protocols during such solemn occasions.

As the nation prepares to bid farewell to one of its past leaders, the drama surrounding his final rites threatens to overshadow what was meant to be a moment of national reflection and unity.
