Kenya’s Nuclear Agency Hosts MPs Amid Plans for Major Facility Upgrade

Kenya’s Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) and the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA) have hosted a delegation of Members of Parliament at the Central Radioactive Waste Processing Facility in Kajiado County, as part of efforts to rally legislative support for upcoming facility upgrades and long-term nuclear energy plans.

The visit was led by the National Assembly’s Committee on Environment, Forestry and Mining, with lawmakers taken through the current status of the facility and the roadmap for its planned expansion. The tour aimed to build parliamentary understanding of the infrastructure needed to safely manage radioactive waste as Kenya pushes forward with its nuclear energy ambitions.

Officials from KNRA revealed that the first phase of the facility, located within the Oloolua Forest, is nearing completion. However, an additional KSh 350 million is required to launch the second phase, which will focus on enhancing the country’s capacity to handle radioactive waste in line with international standards.

NuPEA also outlined the broader national nuclear agenda, including the proposed construction of Kenya’s first nuclear power plant by 2027, with an operational target set for 2034. The agency is seeking over KSh 500 billion for the project, alongside KSh 11 billion to establish a research reactor.

During the visit, MPs were briefed on safety protocols, regulatory oversight, and the strategic role nuclear energy could play in meeting Kenya’s growing electricity demand. Lawmakers raised questions about environmental safeguards, public sensitization, and the siting of future nuclear facilities—especially in Kilifi and Kwale counties.

KNRA’s Director General emphasized that the facility will serve as a key pillar of the country’s nuclear readiness, helping Kenya transition from planning to operational capability while adhering to international best practices.

The visit comes at a critical time as Kenya intensifies preparations for integrating nuclear power into its energy mix, with growing attention to infrastructure, safety, and stakeholder engagement.
