The family of the late police officer David Ojwang has accused President William Ruto and Attorney General Justin Muturi of shielding Deputy Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja Lagat from facing justice over the officer’s death.
Ojwang, who served in the National Police Service, died under circumstances his relatives and rights groups describe as suspicious, with allegations of foul play involving senior police officials. The family claims that despite evidence and multiple calls for an independent investigation, the case has been delayed or ignored due to high-level protection for Lagat.
Civil society organizations have joined the family in demanding accountability, urging the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to act swiftly. They argue that shielding senior officers undermines the rule of law and deepens public mistrust in Kenya’s justice system.
The accusations come amid growing scrutiny of police conduct in Kenya, where cases of alleged extrajudicial killings and cover-ups have sparked outrage both locally and internationally.
