In a press statement today, the African Union–UN Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), said that, after receiving access, its verification team – which included representatives from police, military and civilian components – spent several hours yesterday touring Tabit village and interviewed a range of the residents, to ascertain the veracity of media reports this past week alleging the mass rapes.
Tabit residents interviewed by the UN included community leaders, ordinary men and women, teachers and students.
“None of those interviewed confirmed that any incident of rape took place in Tabit on the day of that media report,” UNAMID said in its statement.
“The team neither found any evidence nor received any information regarding the media allegations during the period in question,” UNAMID added.
Further to the statement, village community leaders reiterated to UNAMID that they “coexist peacefully” with local military authorities in the area. The team also interviewed the local Sudanese Armed Forces Commander.
UNAMID said it intends to conduct “further follow-up actions on the matter,” including possible additional investigations and patrols, in coordination with relevant host authorities and in accordance with the Status of Forces Agreement between the Government of Sudan and UNAMID.
This past week, UNAMID expressed deep concern about the allegations of mass rapes in Tabit, which is located 45 kilometres south-west of El Fasher, in North Darfur, declaring that it would conduct a thorough investigation into the veracity of the claims.
Tensions have been simmering across Darfur over the past few months. In October, an attack on UNAMID peacekeepers by armed militants claimed the lives of three peacekeepers.
The UN estimates that some 385,000 people have been displaced by the conflict between the Government of Sudan and armed movements in Darfur since the start of 2014. The world body has repeatedly called on all sides to join negotiations aimed at achieving a permanent ceasefire and comprehensive peace for the people of Darfur, which has witnessed fighting since 2003.
UNAMID, formally established in 2007, has been mandated to protect civilians, support humanitarian assistance, monitor and verify implementation of agreements, contribute to the promotion of human rights and the rule of law, and assist in the political reconciliation following the 2003 civil war between the Government of Sudan and militias and other armed rebel groups.

Après avoir obtenu l’accès hier à enquêter sur les allégations des viols massifs de 200 femmes et filles dans une ville du Nord du Darfour, au Soudan, la mission hybride UA-ONU a dit que son équipe a trouvé aucune preuve confirmant les allégations et a reçu aucune information concernant des actes prétendus.
Dans un communiqué de presse aujourd’hui, l’opération hybride Union – UN africaine au Darfour (MINUAD), dit que, après avoir reçu un accès, son équipe de vérification – qui comprenait des représentants de la police, militaire et composantes civiles – a passé plusieurs heures en tournée hier Tabit village et interviewé un éventail des résidents, de vérifier la véracité des médias est signalé alléguant les viols massifs de semaine dernière.

« Aucune des personnes interrogées ont confirmé que tout incident de viol a eu lieu à Tabit le jour de ce rapport de médias, » MINUAD dit dans sa déclaration.
« L’équipe a trouvé aucune preuve ni reçu aucune information concernant les allégations de médias pendant la période en question, » a ajouté MINUAD.
Suite à la déclaration, chefs de village communautaire a réitéré à la MINUAD qu’ils “coexistent pacifiquement” avec les autorités militaires locales dans la région. L’équipe a également interrogé le commandant local des Forces armées soudanaises.
MINUAD dit il a l’intention de mener des « autres actions de suivi sur la question, » y compris les éventuelles enquêtes supplémentaires et patrouilles, en coordination avec les autorités du pays hôte pertinentes et conformément à l’accord sur le statut des Forces entre le gouvernement soudanais et la MINUAD.
La semaine dernière, MINUAD s’inquiètent profondément les allégations de viols massifs dans Tabit, qui est situé à 45 kilomètres au sud-ouest dEl Fasher, au Darfour-Nord, déclarant qu’il entendait procéder à une enquête approfondie sur la véracité des revendications.
Les tensions ont été frémissante partout au Darfour au cours des derniers mois. En octobre, une attaque contre les soldats de la MINUAD par des militants armés a coûté la vie de trois soldats de la paix.
L’ONU estime que quelque 385 000 personnes ont été déplacées par le conflit entre le gouvernement soudanais et les mouvements armés au Darfour depuis le début de 2014. L’organisme mondial a demandé à plusieurs reprises sur tous les côtés à rejoindre les négociations vise à parvenir à un cessez-le-feu permanent et une paix globale pour le peuple du Darfour, qui a été témoin de combats depuis 2003.
MINUAD, officiellement créée en 2007, a été mandaté pour protéger les civils, l’assistance humanitaire, surveiller et vérifier l’application des accords, contribuent à la promotion des droits de l’homme et la primauté du droit et aider à la réconciliation politique après la guerre civile de 2003 entre le gouvernement soudanais et les milices et autres groupes rebelles armés.
