Pop superstar Madonna has urged fans to donate money to help victims of the deadly floods which have swept through Malawi over the past week.
The Material Girl hitmaker, who has close ties to the African nation, jumped into action after Tropical Cyclone Bansi ripped through the country last week (ends16Jan15), causing extreme flooding.
Further storms have followed and although the official death toll is currently unknown, local charity bosses at Gift of the Givers claim more than 170 people have been killed in the natural disaster, while a further 200,000 people are said to have been displaced as homes and bridges have been completely submerged.
Now Madonna has encouraged her Instagram.com followers to “say a prayer for Malawi” and donate what they can to the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) to help those in need.
She shared a snap of the extreme flooding online and issued a call to action by captioning the photo, “Malawi needs our help! Massive Floods have killed at least 48 and displaced more than 100 thousand! People!!! Please join me and @UnicefUSA in providing emergency aid to those who lost their homes and loved ones! Donate.”
Madonna adopted two children, David and Mercy, from Malawi and established the Raising Malawi foundation to build schools for disadvantaged kids across the nation.
