Makerere University Printery has received new film-processing equipment.
Kampala businessman Hasan Mumtaz donated the equipment worth Shs 150m to the university, during a ceremony at the university printery on May 27.
Mumtaz formally handed the equipment over to the chairman of the University’s Endowment Fund, Dr Martin Aliker, as part of his regular support to Uganda’s oldest institution of higher learning.
He explained that he has been supporting Makerere since 1983, and thanked university staff for their contribution to knowledge across the country.
He cited the example of Prophet Muhammad, who served the world yet he was poor.
Receiving the equipment, Aliker urged other well-wishers to support the university in building a students’ centre.
The centre is expected to house more students, in addition to the halls of residence. Aliker’s Endowment Fund is mobilizing resources to build the students centre.
According to the manager of the printery, Joseph Edmond Kirabo, the printery has been lacking this equipment for the last 20 years.
Consequently, the printery has been spending about Shs 45m annually in outsourcing the printer’s service from printing firms along Nasser road.
“With this machine, the Makerere University Printery will save Shs 45m annually. We will also add value to our production process in terms of enhanced quality and timely deliveries.” Kirabo said.
