President Mnangagwa urges Africa to embrace technology for development

YOKOHAMA, JAPAN – PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has underscored the importance of embracing new technologies to accelerate infrastructure development and enhance service delivery.

He made the remarks while addressing delegates at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama, Japan.

The President said Zimbabwe is investing in regional digital infrastructure projects aimed at narrowing the gap between rural and urban communities.

“Zimbabwe is actively pursuing regional digital infrastructure projects to bridge the digital divide, especially in rural areas. Africa’s citizens and economies must be enabled to fully participate in the digital age. New technologies must impact our agriculture, mining, blue economies, infrastructure development, and social service delivery,” he said.

President Mnangagwa also highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships between African nations and Japanese companies in building a prosperous future.

“We note and commend the TICAD 9 priority areas, and are confident that these will enable us to deliver on the ambitious and yet achievable objectives. The enduring partnership between Japan and Africa must see us co-create the future we want, hand-in-hand and side-by-side, towards a higher quality of life for our peoples, no one and no country must be left behind,” he said.

TICAD 9 has attracted over 40 heads of state and government and other representatives beyond the African continent.
